The tragedy of 9-11 will forever burn in many of our memories as its traumatic impact was deeply felt 22 years ago and is still being relived by first responders, those who lost loved ones and the traumatic stress that affected New York City and surrounding areas, our communities including many individuals, family members and friends. Recently, we have also witnessed natural disasters or those exacerbated by human error such as in the wildfires of Maui, Hawaii and n the path of destruction brought forth by Hurricane Idalia. And, last weekend, our local sister community of Allegany experienced the effects of a tragic car accident that led to severe injury, loss of life and serious trauma.
During a crisis, it is critical for us to come together as we did for 9-11, now Patriots’ Day, as we grieve, support, comfort and console one another when we respond by offering financial, emotional and community support, where and when possible. An important part of any ability to cope is the reliance on the “other” in our lives. This “other” is not only the God from above but the everyday folk of below. God gives us each other to be instruments in relieving the suffering and pain. Please inform us if someone you know is in need of support dealing with a crisis situation by contacting us in the main offices of our linked parish communities -- Basilica: Bonnie, 716-372-4841; St. John’s: Katie, 716-372-5313). Tell us of your or another’s specific needs. As mentioned in a recent bulletin announcement and in online messaging, our linked parish communities are in the process of establishing a Mental Health Team to help disseminate referrals and resources for our Southern Tier and beyond. At this time and listed below is the list of the initial group that will meet to formulate a team approach to network and offer support: Rev. John Adams, Carol Autieri, Carmella Bartimole, Rev. Peter, Bassey, Marion Boyce, Diane “Dee” Cecchi, Anne Miles, Ruth Palmquist, Dcn. Matthew Wenke Please let us know if you are interested to volunteer your expertise, abilities, skills and/or your caring support to help with our establishing a local Mental Health resource team. Below is an example of what information we will provide in established sources of support or in real time to help in the many areas of vulnerability that affect the mental health of our greater community. Let us join in these critical endeavors and efforts and respond to opportunities for support and involvement.
